Getting to Know You

Getting to Know You

As I worked on this website over the past few days, I’ve been asking myself: “How do I start the blog jawn? What do I call it? How do I introduce myself?”

Then I searched for myself on YouTube (as one does) and found a video from a reading I hosted in 2018. Let’s be clear: I know I’m a hand talker; I’ve been told time and again (and again and again). In fact, I’ve been in work meetings where people find it really important to interrupt me and comment on my hand talking, rather than allowing me to finish or, I dunno, actually responding to the substance of my words. (And, yes, that’s just as irritating as it sounds.)

But I digress…

Anyway, I found this video and realized just how wild my hand talking can get. Then I realized, THIS would be the perfect introduction for anyone has never met me. So, I gif-isized myself.

(Look, Ma! I'm a gif.)

Why? Because I don’t take myself seriously. I’m a poet, but you probably already knew that – from the about & writing, etc. And I take poetry seriously. And art. And the world & politics. And definitely punctuation. But myself? Not so much. Because I also love bad tv & teen movies & superheroes & catchy pop music – and yes, I’m probably too old for all of it. But I’m also old enough to not care if I’m too old or if liking these things means I’m not a “serious” artist. Whatever that is.

(Uh oh... I've digressed again.)

PS. You should totally watch the whole video. Because Steve reads, and he’s awesome.
